Nanorods

Nanorods are made from silicon, metals such as titanium, tin, and zinc, other semiconductors, and insulators. Depending on the starting material, nanorods have different electronic, optical, and mechanical properties that work in a variety of applications, including electronics, sensors, optical components and displays, polymer composites, and actuator devices.
Creation of nanorods is usually done in a vapor phase (for example, evaporation/condensation) or by wet chemistry methods. However, they can also be grown on gel substrates with electrophoretic deposition that is, by drawing of a mixture of materials through a fine gel with an electric current, and high heat for crystallization.
After nanorods are created, they can then be self-assembled into larger nanomaterials and structures with highly reactive surfaces.
